Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a toddler when her father who worked as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She attended school in Boston. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. This path was fraught with problems. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to find work on stage. Then in NYC, she volunteered at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning before moving to Boston. There she made a buck working as an usherette during the day, and at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
